Street Jiu-Jitsu vs. Sport Jiu-Jitsu

I saw this great video on You Tube a couple of days ago, and I thought I should post it here.

Published on Jun 25, 2012 by GracieAcademy

How street ready are you? With so much debate and confusion surrounding the issue of street vs. sport jiu-jitsu, Ryron and Rener sit down for a very candid talk in which they explain the fundamental differences between the two. In a few very simple demonstrations, they make it very clear that "street jiu-jitsu" isn't defined by a set number of techniques, but rather the universal principles of distance management without which one stands little chance of defeating, let alone surviving, the aggressive onslaught of a larger opponent in a real fight. By no means, is this video meant to demean or discredit any jiu-jitsu instructors. Instead, it is meant to serve as a reminder to students and instructors everywhere as to how jiu-jitsu became the most respected martial art on the planet. If you have questions or comments, please post them at http://www.GracieUniversity.com

BT'S 411

The man you see in the video below, is named Novell Bell, aka The Black Taoist, or "BT" for short. He is one of my favorite Martial Art instructors to watch on You Tube. He has more than 200 videos posted on his You Tube channel URBAN BLACK TAOIST, showing many aspects of Bagua, Tai Chi, and Hsing I, as well as other forms of chinese martial arts.

What I like about him the most is his thoughts on the state of the martial arts today, Kung Fu specifically, which he always shares in a no-nonsense manner (in fact, he also says his nickname BT stands for "Brutal Truth"), as illustrated in the video below.

Here's some links to a few other videos Novell posted on You Tube. Although he's talking about the Chinese Martial Arts in the videos below, as he was in the above video, the things he says can apply to EVERY Martial Art or Fighting sport.

MUSU 411 : "BT response online Kung Fu magazine haters"

BT 411: kung fu & Evolution /Shaolin Monk Yi Long fights in "Vegas"

BT AT THE MOVIES "OLD SCHOOL KUNG FU MASTERS FIGHT"

BT MUSU 411 "STATE OF KUNG FU TODAY "

Now in the video BT MUSU 411 "STATE OF KUNG FU TODAY ", Sifu Novell made a tiny reference about some comments that UFC commentator JOE ROGAN said about Kung Fu in a You Tube video, which pissed a few people off as you can imagine, and which Sifu Novell responded to.

And, here's video response video response to Joe Rogan's statements that I found quite informative about MMA fighting, and Kung Fu's use in it.

And, here's yet another response to Joe Rogan's comments that many people found to be quite amusing. And Joe found it amusing too, at least that's the way I see it, judging from his response to that video.

Now in my humble opinion, what Sifu Novell, and Joe Rogan were both talking about was how in ANY martial art, there are aspects like forms, meditation, etc. that can give you all sorts of benefits, but if you don't learn to APPLY YOUR MARTIAL ART UNDER PRESSURE, you're gonna lose every time, in the ring or on the street. That applies to Kung Fu, that applies to MMA, that applies to Pencak Silat (which I'm learning), and it applies to EVERY SINGLE MARTIAL ART THAT HAS EVER EXISTED. I think it was Rorion Gracie who made a statement that went something like,

One of the primary reasons one trains in the martial arts is for self defense. If you learn something and can't defend yourself, then how much of the rest of your training is a lie?

But I could be wrong about that.

But Anyway, if any of you out there watch You Tube and are in to martial arts, Check out URBAN BLACK TAOIST. I guarantee, if you're into Martial Arts, you will learn a great deal from his videos.

And check out Joe Rogan too. The man is freaking AWESOME!

Any time you're in an intense, potentially life-threatening situation, the body naturally kicks into "fight or flight" mode. It's an unconscious reaction where -- in a matter of adrenaline-pumped nanoseconds -- you size up the danger and either a) fight your way to safety or, if the perceived danger is too great b) flee the scene. If you're Priscilla Dang, though, sometimes you do both at the same time. Dang was on a run in a Vancouver, Wash., neighborhood last Friday when two teenagers on bikes, one 16, the other 18, approached her from behind. "One went in front and made eye contact with me like a smirk, like I thought he was saying 'Hi,'" said Dang of the encounter to KATU. "The next thing I knew I was pretty much groped on my bottom behind left side." Unfortunately for the alleged gropers, the 23-year-old woman has taken kung-fu lessons since she was 5. Her family owns the Summit Wushu Academy, an Oregon martial arts studio. She instantly pushed one of the teenagers to the ground and made him apologize. When the second teenager called her a derogatory term, Dang says she snapped, hitting him in the face several times while simultaneously dodging his punches. According to The Columbian, when he pulled out a knife she used his bike as a shield until a passerby showed up and called 911. "I think they knew they messed with the wrong girl," Dang added to KATU. Both suspects fled the scene and were later apprehended by sheriff's deputies, reports KPTV. The 18-year-old suspect is now facing fourth-degree assault charges, while the 16-year-old will be judged by a juvenile prosecutor.

This demonstration show what nice people martial artists are. When my own students couldn't make it to the demo, Kru Mel Bellissimo of LANA MMA offered his help by volunteering his own students for my demo.

I had never worked with them before, and they new very little about me. But the nature of the event and our common interest instilled an automatic trust. My demonstrations ended up showing less about my skill and my art than it did about the quality, skill, and character of the students and instructors at LANA MMA. George Zimmerman's Reenactment Of Trayvon Martin Shooting (VIDEO)

Please click on the link Below to go to the original story with the video.

George Zimmerman's Reenactment Of Trayvon Martin Shooting (VIDEO):

ORLANDO, Fla. — George Zimmerman appears believable when he re-enacts for police what he says led to the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, but some of his statements are questionable, lawyers who reviewed the footage Thursday said.

Even a detective who interrogates the neighborhood watch leader in an audio recording points out inconsistencies in his story, particularly Zimmerman's claim that Martin confronted him, punched him and slammed his head onto the ground when the teenager had no prior history of violence.

Detective Chris Sereno asks Zimmerman whether he was profiling Martin because he was black, a claim Martin's parents have made.

"You know you are going to come under a lot of scrutiny for this," Sereno said. "Had this person been white, would you have felt the same way?"

"Yes," said Zimmerman, who father is white and his mother Hispanic.

The video and audio tapes released by Zimmerman's attorney give Zimmerman's most detailed account yet of what led to the Feb. 26 shooting. They were released almost a week before Zimmerman's second bond hearing on a second-degree murder charge, and on the heels of unflattering telephone calls capturing Zimmerman and his wife talking in code about using money collected for a defense fund to pay credit cards.

Zimmerman claims he shot the unarmed 17-year-old Martin teen in self-defense, under Florida's "stand your ground" law.

Martin's parents have said Zimmerman was the aggressor. They said Martin was walking back from a convenience store through the gated community in Sanford when Zimmerman spotted Martin and started following him.

In the video ( ), Zimmerman said he grabbed his gun from a holster on his waist before Martin could get it, and shot Martin once in the chest as they fought on the ground outside townhomes in a gated community. After firing, Zimmerman said he thought he missed. http://apne.ws/KWquJX

"He sat up and said, `You got me. You got me, or something like that,'" Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman said Martin had been on top of him, slamming his head against the ground and smothering his mouth and nose with his hand and arm. The tape shows two butterfly bandages on the back of Zimmerman's head and another on his nose. There are red marks on the front of his head.

"It felt like my head was going to explode," he said.

Criminal defense lawyers who reviewed the video for The Associated Press and have no connection to the case said there were some parts that didn't add up.

"He came across as being straight-forward," attorney David Hill said. "I didn't see him being too slick on the details."

Hill said the video didn't show him to be the zealous "cop-wannabe" that Martin's parents have portrayed.

Zimmerman claims Martin confronted him after the neighborhood watch leader had given up searching for him and was walking back to his truck. But there doesn't appear to be a place to hide in the area where Zimmerman says Martin suddenly appeared, Hill pointed out.

Zimmerman's injuries also don't appear to be consistent with the severity of the attack he described, Hill said.

Attorney Blaine McChesney said he found parts of Zimmerman's re-enactment difficult to envision, such as his account of how he was able to reach for his gun with Martin on top of him. Zimmerman said he got on top of Martin after the shooting to restrain him.

"I also find it strange that Zimmerman would have attempted to use both his arms to hold Martin facedown, re-holstering his firearm, given those circumstances," McChesney said. "Once out from under Martin's alleged attack, it would have been more logical to hold Martin at gunpoint from a few feet away until police arrived."

In one of the audio recordings, Sereno tells Zimmerman three days after the shooting that Martin was a "good kid, mild-mannered kid."

Sereno tells Zimmerman that Martin, an athlete with an interest in aeronautics, was "a kid with a future, a kid with folks that care." The detective said Martin only had a bag of Skittles and an iced tea on him when he died.

"Not a goon," Sereno said.

He asked Zimmerman to explain why he doesn't have bruises on his body or broken ribs. The two dozen punches Zimmerman claims he took are "not quite consistent with your injuries," Sereno said.

Benjamin Crump, the attorney for Martin's parents, couldn't immediately be reached for comment Thursday. But appearing on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight," Crump said Zimmerman's credibility is the issue.

"Everybody's going to have to look at this for what it is," Crump said. "You've got objective evidence, and then you've got George Zimmerman's versions. You put them up against one another and we know that written statement that he did that night doesn't match up to that 911 tape.

"And there are other inconsistencies, and when we see the lie, we've got to call it out and say, there's his credibility again, and that's the important thing."

Zimmerman called police after spotting Martin walking around the neighborhood and the dispatcher told him not to follow the teen. For reasons that are still unclear, Zimmerman kept up his pursuit, even getting out of his truck. He lost sight of Martin and was walking back to his truck when Martin confronted him, Zimmerman said.

"Do you have a problem?" Zimmerman said, quoting Martin.

If Zimmerman's account his accurate, he has a viable "stand your ground" defense, McChesney said.

Zimmerman's attorney has the option of asking for a "stand your ground" hearing in which he will present Zimmerman's account to a judge and ask that the charge be dismissed without going to trial.

Zimmerman's second bond hearing will be June 29. His $150,000 bond was revoked earlier this month after prosecutors said Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, misled the court about how much money they had available for bail. Shellie Zimmerman was charged last week with making a false statement.

Defense attorney Mark O'Mara said his client will be shown to have told the truth about the incident, even though the statement regarding the Zimmermans' finances was shown to be false.

"The attacks on Mr. Zimmerman's credibilities are going to pale in comparison to the undeniable, objective evidence," he said.

___ Associated Press writers Freida Frisaro, Kelli Kennedy, Laura Wides in Miami, Greg Schreier and Bernard McGhee in Atlanta and Brent Kallestad in Tallahassee contributed to this report. Follow Mike Schneider on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/MikeSchneiderAP

A link to the above article was shared on facebook earlier today by a man named Jeff Moldovan, along with comments of his opinion of what might have happened that night, which I share below.

Jeff Moldovan is the chief instructor of TLM's FIGHTING CHANCE DEFENSIVE TACTICS LLC. Check out his website, fcssafehouse.com for more information about who he is, and what he does.

AGAIN: We tried reenacting Zimmerman's account multiple times at our scenario training facility in Orlando. We had different guys playing both roles, Zimmerman and Martin. You'll notice in all video and photo evidence of Zimmerman during and immediately after the event, his hair was very, very short. Shorter than a crew cut. We found it difficult, if not impossible, for the person on top, to grab and slam or bang the bottom persons head on the pad we had placed below it to allow force to be used. And that was with the person on the bottom acting stunned and compliant. When the bottom person struggled or resisted even a little, the top person could NOT and did NOT have any leverage or anything to grab, to bang the bottom person's head onto the pad. Even when trying to use the ears as hand holds. Add the rain and sweat factor and it gets even more difficult to hold on to a slippery, squirming head. I believe that Zimmerman may have revealed his weapon, whether deliberately or not. Martin, whose skittles where in his hoodie pocket with drink in left hand may have reacted by dropping iced tea and sucker punching Zimmerman on right bridge of nose ( indicating left handed strike ). The sucker punch may have knocked Z man backwards, causing him to fall on uneven surface, striking back of his head on concrete, resulting in the vertical and then horizontal abrasions as seen. Z man likely panicked at this point. Went for his weapon on right side. Martin seeing this would have been compelled to jump on the downed man where the struggle for possession of the weapon resulted in his being shot once in the chest at close quarters. I am a long time martial artist/self defense instructor, as well as former celebrity bodyguard, bouncer and film and television stunt coordinator and fight choreographer. Violence and the physics and psychology of violence are my specialties. I have experienced violence in all it's gruesome aspects. We teach law enforcement, military and civilians. No, I was not a witness. My suppositions are based on common sense, analysis, and years of research and experience. I ask all my interested martial arts brothers, especially the grapplers and MMA guys, to try and recreate this event yourselves and let me know what you discover or think. I do not think Zimmerman is necessarily a racist…I consider him more," an equal opportunity bully," and wannabe cop, trying to play neighborhood hero. Also, I by no means am against, law abiding citizens carrying weapons for self protection. But I know, as do most of you, there are plenty of people packin heat, just lookin for reason to pop a cap on somebody. Just my opinion folks. I enjoy intelligent discussion but will not engage in argumentative and inflammatory dialogue with anyone.

When I asked Jeff if it was O.K. for me to post what he said on my blog, he had this to say...

Not at all John….it's only an opinion, but I've been watching from the beginning and paying close attention to all sides….it still boils down to one simple thing that seems to keep being overlooked in his self defense claim…He, ( Zimmerman ) choose to ignore dispatch advice to not pursue or follow Martin. He was armed. That to me shows an intent to engage or confront. There was no actual crime being committed at the time. " He looks suspicious." What the hell exactly does that mean and does it give a person, ( not a law officer or even licensed security ) a right to confront and kill an unarmed person? I certainly hope the hell the answer is an emphatic…No. And I am far from a pablum puking liberal.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!!

"Happy Father's Day." The phrase is loaded with meaning. It means lessons learned, skills taught, character qualities, bestowed, and a life molded. I don't know what it's like to be a father, because I don't have any children yet, and I have to admit, I'm a little scared at the prospect of being a father. I bet before I was born, my father was a little scared too... But he raised me, along with my 4 siblings to adulthood, and we ALL know that he did a hell of a job.

When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.

SUNDAY SCHOOL VIDEO

For today's Sunday School Video, I present you, THE BOOK OF JOB.

Published on Apr 27, 2012 by DarkMatter2525

This is bully porn. Why do bad things happen to good people? Well, we're actually made privy of God's "mysterious" reason in this particular case, and we find out that it isn't so mysterious after all. Historically, Job has been revered as a great work of literature. Nobody really knows who wrote it, but the powers that be figured it had to be God-breathed. This book disgusts me mainly because it values material possessions over sons and daughters. Job's children were killed, and he's supposed to be fine with that because God returned twice the amount of his possessions. Sorry, not good enough. Yeah, Job had ten more kids, but as any parent who has lost a child can tell you: ONE CHILD DOES NOT REPLACE ANOTHER. This book touts an immoral message, and it's paraded by many as deep and insightful. Many religious folk are told what this book is about, but don't actually read it for themselves, or they squirm with inaccurate interpretations that are directly contrary to the actual literature. They're almost forced to, because they've devoted themselves to the bible, and this immoral message is in the bible. But the message is quite easy to understand. Fuck this book.

Omar Faruk Tekbilek - Zeynep's Romance!

I was going to use this song in my daily messages tomorrow, but it's so beautiful, I felt it needed a post all it's own.

Uploaded by tiad on Mar 13, 2011
A masterpiece from the original motion picture soundtrack album from the Turkish movie "Kelebek" (2009, "The Butterfly", Director: Cihan Taskin). The music is composed by Brian Keane and Omar Faruk Tekbilek. Listen & Enjoy it.

Found on Internet:
"Brian Keane and Omar Faruk Tekbilek met more than two decades ago when Brian Keane discovered Omar playing in a club in New York, and hired him to play on his score to the Suzanne Bauman documentary about the art of the Ottoman Empire "Suleyman the Magnificent" in 1987. German record company owner Eckart Rahn noticed the music when the program aired and released the soundtrack on his Celestial Harmonies label. Their collaboration would grow to become among the most influential in both Eastern and Western music, pushing the boundaries of musical, spiritual, and geographical traditions. Since their initial work together, Brian Keane has become a Grammy winning record producer of over 100 records, and a multiple Emmy award winning film and television composer of over 400 films, while Omar Faruk Tekbilek has grown to become an international recording artist and concert musician, and one of the most well known and influential Turkish musician's in the world. Over the years, Omar and Brian have continued to work together, with Brian serving as producer and a composer on many of Omar's recordings, and Omar making the occasional appearance on Mr. Keane's film scores. Their last record collaboration together however, was the 1993 classic recording "Beyond The Sky" and their 1990 record "Fire Dance" was nominated for a Grammy.

With the "Kelebek" ("The Butterfly") soundtrack, film producer Mahmut Bengi has brought Brian Keane and Omar Faruk Tekbilek together once again to create the music to this mystical and tragic story. The result is remarkable and moving. The score to Kelebek effortlessly flows from East to West, from orchestral score to traditional Turkish music, and into electronic sound design. The music moves just as effortlessly between moods, from mystical to tragic to suspense to folkloric or romantic. Whether it is the fusion of Jazz and red hot Middle Eastern musicianship...The beautiful melodic and harmonic East West mixtures of "Yusuf's Theme" and "Zeynep's Romance".....Brian and Omar continue to push the boundaries of musical tradition while simultaneously demonstrating a respect and affection for those traditions and their spiritual origins. Now in their mid fifties, Brian and Omar have continued growing in their own world's as prominent master musicians.."

I AM (Full Documentary)

Published on Apr 30, 2012 by Kleinkampf

I AM is a 2011 documentary film written, narrated, and directed by Tom Shadyac. The documentary explores Shadyac's personal journey after a 2007 bicycle accident, "the nature of humanity" and "world's ever-growing addiction to materialism." The film, shot with Shadyac and a team of four, contrasts sharply with Shadyac's previous comedic work. Shadyac had suffered post-concussion syndrome after a 2007 bicycle accident in Virginia, experiencing months of acute headaches and hyper-sensitivity to light and noise. The injury followed the cumulative effects of previous mild head injuries Shadyac had suffered surfing, mountain biking and playing basketball.

A 2011 New York Times article stated that: "the symptoms of a concussion [didn't] go away. Something as simple as a trip to the grocery store was painful for Shadyac, whose brain was unable to filter various stimuli. After medical treatments failed to help, he isolated himself completely, sleeping in his closet and walling the windows of his mobile home with black-out curtains. As his symptoms finally began to subside, the director wanted to share his inner quest in the way he knew best: through film." Shadyac likened the experience to Dante's Seventh Circle of Hell. Shadyac subsequently gave away his excess fortune, opening a homeless shelter in Charlottesville, Virginia and making a key donation to Telluride, Colorado's effort to set aside a natural area at the town's entrance. He reoriented and simplified his life, sold his 17,000-square-foot (1,600 m2) Los Angeles mansion and moved into a trailer park -- albeit the exclusive Paradise Cove park in Malibu.

In the film, Shadyac conducts interviews with scientists, religious leaders, environmentalists and philosophers including Desmond Tutu, Noam Chomsky, Lynne McTaggart, Elisabet Sahtouris, David Suzuki, Howard Zinn, and Thom Hartmann. The film asks two central questions: What's Wrong With the World? and What Can We Do About it?. It is about "human connectedness, happiness, and the human spirit", and explores themes including Darwinism, Western mores, loneliness, the economy, and the drive to war. The documentary includes animated scenes explaining scientific concepts, as well as clips from the films Wall Street and It's a Wonderful Life.

The L.A. Times said the film "was collection of sound bites that validate the filmmaker's point of view. What lifts the film above its dubious boilerplate assemblage of talking heads and archival images is Shadyac himself. With his gentle, self-mocking humor, he comes across as an exceptionally mellow, earnest and likable guy." Roger Ebert gave the film a negative review, stating that the "film is often absurd and never less than giddy with uplift, but that's not to say it's bad. I watched with an incredulous delight, and at the end, I liked Tom Shadyac quite a lot...he offers us this hopeful if somewhat undigested cut of his findings, in a film as watchable as a really good TV commercial, and just as deep. " Proceeds from the documentary go to the Foundation for I AM, which supports various charities.

Guess what's going on in Santa Monica Tomorrow Afternoon?

The Greater Los Angeles Chapter (USNC) for UN WOMEN is honored to welcome you to join our First Annual Women's Peace Walk.

Origins of Mother’s Day
In 1858, Anna Reeves Jarvis created Mothers’ Work Days in West Virginia to raise awareness of sanitation issues. During and after the Civil War, she continued these work days to promote the health of all combatants and enhance reconciliation. In 1870, Julia Ward Howe wrote the Mother’s Day Peace Proclamation, encouraging the use of June 2 as a day for women to come together to discuss “the amicable settlement of international questions.” The author of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” was greatly troubled by the Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. She declared “Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience”.

UN Women is dedicated to supporting women’s economic empowerment and political equality, ending gender-based violence, enhancing peace and security, and supporting the Millennium Development Goals. The US National Committee educates the public about UN Women’s work and advocates for full funding of its initiatives.

The recently formed Greater LA Chapter wants to work closely with like-minded organization and individuals to support these goals. We envision this silent walk through Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade as a way to reflect on our roles as Practitioners of Peace and Social Change.

Speakers and music will precede and follow the walk.

I have a prior engagement and won't be able to make it, but if some of you guys out there go to the walk, I hope you come check out a VERY SPECIAL LADY and her band... and tell her I said hello.

I wish I could be there.
