Changing the World in 2012
By John Perkins
One of the greatest gifts I had in 2011 was traveling the world – to places as varied as New York, Maui, Costa Rica, and Istanbul and speaking to thousands of people about what we can do to change the faulty systems we humans have established.
Each and every one of us came into this life with a mission. Part of mine is to inspire and empower as many people as possible to open up to their – your -- missions and choose a better way. (If you’d like me to talk to your group, please email my booking agent Peg Booth at pegbooth@boothmedia.com .)
2011 was a remarkable year. Ruthless tyrants were toppled, the banking systems broke down, our troops left Iraq, and OCCUPY jump-started a movement away from the predatory capitalism that has ruled our country and negatively impacted the world.
Yet we cannot rest on our laurels in 2012. We can no longer let those in Congress hoodwink us with their incessant bickering; nor can we allow the presidential election to distract us from the fact that the strings are pulled by people in corporate offices, not the White House.
Whether Obama, Gingrich, Romney or Paul sit in the Oval Office is not nearly as important as the actions we each take every day. What matters is the message you send to your government and business leaders – the “little” things, like switching to local banks, farmers, and merchants; not accumulating debt; buying the greenest products possible and emailing the companies you do not buy from to let them know the reasons, as well as the ones you do buy from praising them; blogging; and speaking out in all the ways that appeal to you.
Your actions are extremely important. They can be as simple as sitting at your desk and supporting online organizations like Care2 – http://www.care2.com . Or as rigorous as organizing demonstrations against the Pentagon. And there is so much in between.
Tom Paine wrote pamphlets, George Washington led armies, and Martha Washington organized women who made clothes for soldiers on the front line. They each honored their individual passions and talents. So can you. When you follow your passions, you overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Your life is enriched.
I am looking forward to 2012 as the year when we dance together to change the world.
And please remember: if you’re interested in partnering with me to organize a speaking event – pegbooth@boothmedia.com . Whether we meet virtually on Facebook – www.facebook.com/johnperkinsauthor – or in person, let’s commit to joining our hands and hearts and creating that world we all desire.
