Why Do People Like to Watch Scary Movies? (Ask Teal Episode about Horror...

The Subject of Today's Ask Teal Episode is: Horror Films
If something scares us, the body immediately releases endorphins, dopamine and norepinephrine. Cocaine — which has long been considered the most addictive substance on earth—does nothing more than flood the brain with dopamine. Norepinephrine, on the other hand, mimics the second most addictive drug on earth: which is speed. Our neuro-chemicals are not equal to these illicit drugs. In fact, they're significantly more powerful. The most common endorphin produced by the body is 100 times more powerful (thus more addictive) than morphine. We become addicted to our own neuro-chemicals; most especially what they cause us to feel. The chemical's natural purpose is for helping a person through a tough or emergency situation. They can provide powerful pain relief and a burst of energy. And it is not only the rush of adrenaline that we become addicted to, it is the wave of relief that we experience one the threat has passed. Adrenaline addiction is a form of escapism just like every other addiction. It is a form of self medication.
No one enjoys being really scared. They enjoy the side benefits of adrenaline and the euphoric relief after the fear has passed. The adrenaline induced high supersedes the memory of the negative feeling of cringing and shock. Which causes people to say "I like to be scared" There are two more big reasons people enjoy horror flicks. The first is... in this society which is highly separated, our sense of community has gone away. This is a big source of disconnection and unhappiness. When you are screaming together with other audience members, you are sharing some very private emotions with strangers around you. It helps us feel connected to other people. The next reason is that Bravery adds to the self concept. For males in particular, part of what attracts them to horror movies, haunted houses and other unsettling experiences is the ability to conquer something that seems threatening, even though it poses no real harm. This gives a sense of success and internal satisfaction.
The purpose of horror films is to entertain and thrill people. However, the idea of murder and torture as the means to accomplish this sense of thrill is disturbing at best. It is an indication of our lack of connection with life itself and with our true selves. This kind of entertainment belittles the worth of life and warps perceptions of what is tolerable. It fuels the very disconnection that we are all so affected by when it effects our physical reality. And it will because anything you focus on, you get more of. It is deeply sad to many beings within this universe as well as me personally that there would ever be a perceived normalcy or enjoyment derived from the desecration of any life form. Which is what a market saturated by images and messages of violence, horror and suspense creates. It creates desensitization and a normalcy to horror. The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry found that children who watched horror films or violent media were much more likely to engage in aggressive behaviors and experience anxiety and sleep disorders. Is this what we want for our future as people? The brain does not perceive as much difference between entertainment and reality as we would like to think that it does. These images and messages do get absorbed into the individual subconscious and worse than that they do get absorbed into the collective subconscious.
Living a life that is in alignment with who we really are, and living a life that promotes well being is not just about the thoughts we are thinking. It is also not just about the foods that we are putting into our body. It is about every single thing we surround ourselves with. It is about everything we introduce to our being. Messages and images are things that we put into our mind and body as well. We have to be very , very honest about whether they are actually beneficial or if they are in fact detrimental.
So the question I would ask you is... what images and messages do you want to put into your mind body? Are these images and message that serve your highest good?
If not, they have no business being your object of attention!

Guess what? Today is EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS. Some of you out there might not know what this holiday is, so I thought I'd give you a little explanation.
EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS (Day of the Dead, in English) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it is a national holiday, and all banks are closed.
The celebration takes place on November 1, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day (November 2). Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. They also leave possessions of the deceased.
Scholars trace the origins of the modern Mexican holiday to indigenous observances dating back hundreds of years and to an Aztec festival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihuatl. The holiday has spread throughout the world: In Brazil, Dia de Finados is a public holiday that many Brazilians celebrate by visiting cemeteries and churches. In Spain, there are festivals and parades, and, at the end of the day, people gather at cemeteries and pray for their dead loved ones. Similar observances occur elsewhere in Europe, and similarly themed celebrations appear in many Asian and African cultures
Although it is a Mexican holiday, it's also observed in many parts of the world. And this Friday, at Olvera Street in Downtown L.A., I'm gonna watch the procession.

GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE!!!
You know what, after a few days of not counting my blessings, I found that I missed doing it. But Anyway...
1. I'm really grateful to have awakened to a new day, because it is another chance for me to get where I want to go in life.
2. I'm grateful for being able to continue on my burpee challenge today! I'm up to 38 burpees.
3. I'm truly grateful to have been able to go to Expo Park and Science Museum, and the African American Museum last friday, because those are places I wanted to go to since I was a teenager.
4. I am very grateful to have gone to the westside last friday, because I got to go to venice beach, the santa monica pier, saw some Krishna Worshippers on the promenade, and saw Chris Pierce and Joe hurt rock the hose at harvelles!!!
5. I am truly grateful to have been able to go to Hollywood & Highland last Saturday, because I saw the hollywood sigh, and I got a D'lush, the best beverage in L.A.!
6. I'm Truly grateful to have been invited to my brother and law's 50th birthday party last Sunday, it was fun!
7. I'm truly grateful to be healthy and in reasonablt fit condition, because it makes me ready and able to work.
8. I'm also truly grateful to be able to continue my home silat training, because it makes me more healthy, and it gives me confidence.
9. I'm truly blessed and thankful for everything that I have, and everything I recieved in my life. because it was all a gift from the heavens, given to me with love.
10. I'm truly blessed to be sitting here typing these things to you, because hopefully it will get some of you out there to count your blessings.

I admit, I don't like quoting Osho, but...
Wisdom is only possible in the absence of the ego. Ego is the hiding place of all kinds of ignorance. It is a shelter for ignorance. It prevents you from bringing light into your being. It is afraid of the light because the moment light comes it will have to go, it will have to leave. Either the ego can exist or wisdom. Ordinarily we all choose the ego and we sacrifice everything for the ego. And the ego never gives you anything. It promises but it never delivers the goods. It is a great politician, always promising, and whatsoever you ask it immediately promises that it will give it to you. If you look back, it has never fulfilled any promise — it cannot, it is impotent. But it is a braggart, it goes on bragging. And it always finds excuses for why you failed last time; this time you are not going to fail, just take a few more precautions. And each time you fail it will find some rationalization, some excuse, and again will convince you to go on along the same route. People waste their whole life hoping against all hope that something will materialize. Nothing ever materializes out of the ego. It is like a desert, nothing grows in it. Once you drop the ego you will be surprised, amazed at what was being prevented by the ego: the whole kingdom of god. It is like a rock preventing all the flow of your life energies. Once the rock is removed you become a beautiful stream and you start moving towards the ocean. And then the meeting with the ocean is not far away. BURNOUT. Each of us has at least once in life was in a state when you want peace, quiet, dont want to be responsible, to answer anyone. When nothing is pleasing and everything annoying. Mental and physical fatigue leads to chronic fatigue, which is the scientific name – a syndrome of emotional burnout. How to protect yourself from burnout:
1. Define your own priorities in life, what is more important: life in the fun with close friends or a sense of self worth and indispensability.
2. Planning will highlight the important and urgent matter, and will also help to get rid of those things that you can not do.
3. Learn to say no. Allow others to solve their problems. It is necessary to distinguish your case from others.
4. Do not forget to celebrate your small victories on the road to the big goal.
5. Let the inspiration to become the most essential part of your life.
6. Do not forget about the positive, developmental and inspiring environment.
7. Take care of yourself, find time to relax, lots of fun, staying alone with nature, sports. 8. Rejoice in each day, admire the beautiful: the music, the rhythm of the rain, flying butterflies, laughing child.

Today's Episode of Ask Teal is About: The Conspiracy Theory involving The New Age Movement.
Summed up, the conspiracy goes like this: "The New Age Movement is created by the Illuminati seeking to create one world order...a collection of false beliefs given by either false prophets or the Illuminati members themselves which will cause chaos and enable them to do what they want here on earth. The Illuminati has created this new age spirituality so we can have a false sense of freedom, and so we over look our Earthly events on the "false" promise of Ascension".
The new age philosophy is a fusion of beliefs which originated far before the illuminati even existed; beliefs which prove to be true again and again when a person seeks God or enlightenment within themselves. The true new age movement is not in the business of feeding people beliefs. Instead, it is in the business of having you question your beliefs and letting you choose the ones that serve you personally. This is hardly a recipe for control. It is a recipe for freedom.
Those who say the new age is merely a design of the new world order, would have you believe that you can not trust yourselves as individuals. They would have you believe that you are capable of being led astray by false prophets.
But the entire principal of the new age movement is that you can be trusted and should trust yourself to know the teachers which are out of alignment from those who are in alignment. Ultimately, you are the ones as individuals who are capable (if you listen to your own heart and emotions) of deciding what is best for you.
Putting faith and power in the individual, is the exact opposite of a recipe for control. It is the understanding of the New Age Movement that your connection to God is YOURS. You do not need to seek that connection through a spiritual teacher. You do not need to seek truth externally. Our only desire is to help you recognize that connection that you have individually to God that no one else can break. When we do this, it is our understanding that you will never be able to be controlled by anyone else. Not a spiritual teacher, not a government, not a one world order. This is the gift inherent in the new age movement. Its aim is not to lead you astray. It is to put you in touch with yourself and your internal compass to such a degree that you could not ever be controlled or hurt by anyone. The new age movement is the opposition to the Illuminati and the new world order. And perhaps, their greatest trick yet, is to convince you that those of us who lead the new age movement are one of them!

1. A smile makes us attractive. We pay attention to people who smile. There is a factor of attraction. We want to know a smiling person and figure out what nice happened with them. Gloom and making faces get people away, and a smile draws them.
2. Smiling changes our mood. The next time you feel overwhelmed, try to put on a smile. This is a great way to change the mood for the better.
3. A smile is contagious. When someone smiles, he infects with smile other people. Smiling person brings happiness.
4. A smile relieves stress. Smiling helps to prevent us from fatigueand congestion. When you’re under stress, take time to put on a smile. The voltage should be reduced, and you will have more opportunities to take action.
5. A smile helps produce endorphins, natural painkillers and serotonin. Togetherthese three components help us to feel good.
6. Smiling helps to look younger.
7. A smile makes you more successful. Smiling people appear more confident. Put a smile on meetings and appointments and people will react to you differently.
8. Smiling helps you to stay positive. Try this: Smile. Now try to think of something bad, without losing the smile. It’s hard. When we smile our body is sending a message to the brain: “Life is beautiful!” Stay away from depression, stress and anxiety with a smile! :-)

Instead of listing 10 things I'm grateful for, today I thought I'd put up this list about being human. I've adopted them for myself, and try to live by them. I am very grateful to be able to post these rules... may you learn from them, as I have, and continue to.
The Rules For Being Human
1. You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours for the entire period this time around.
2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time, informal school called life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and stupid.
3. There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial and error, experimentation. The “failed” experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately “works”.
4. A lesson is repeated until it is learned. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. Then you can go on to the next lesson.
5. Learning lessons does not end. There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.
6. “There” is no better than “here”. When your “there” has become a “here”, you will simply obtain another “there” that again, looks better than “here”.
7. Others are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself.
8. What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need; what you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.
9. The answers lie inside you. The answers to life’s questions lie inside you. All you need to do is look, listen and trust.

Now as I said last Monday, in celebration of Danni El's return to L.A., all this week, I gonna be posting videos of Danni performing her songs.
Today's video is actually 2 videos. In both videos, Danni is performing her song, "Little Heart", a song she wrote for her son.
The first video is actually a little promo for the Downtown L.A. Artwalk. I actually learned of this artwalk because Danni had announced on her facebook page that she was performing there. In fact, the day they took that video of her, I was there. I gave her a cheap little bracelet as a gift, and I met Christopher Bear, who was her percussionist that day.

GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE!!! So, what am I grateful for today? Well...
1. I am grateful for this brand new day, because it's another day full of oppurtunities for me to get closer to my goals in life.
2. I'm truly happy and blessed that todayis Thursday, which means, Bacon-Wrapped Hot Dog at Sausage Masters!
3. I'm grateful for all the true friends I've ever made, past and present, because without them, life would have been so boring!
4. I'm Truly grateful to have my bike, with I have been able to go around town.
5. I'm grateful for the fact that I may have an opportunity to try something that I haven't been able to because I couldn't afford it, because I've wanted to try it for over 10 years now
6. I'm glad and happy that I am still strong and healthy enough to start this new thing, because I'm gonna need all the strength I can get.
7. I am very grateful to be able to continue my silat practice.
8. I'm happy and grateful to still be able to keep up my 100 Burpee Challenge! I'm now up to 33 burpees.

GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE!!!
1. I am grateful that I woke up today, because it's a brand new day, full of oppurtunities to help me achieve my goals in life.
2. I'm very happy and grateful that I was born into this life, because I feel that life has had many lessons to teach me, both good and bad, and I know that life has many more things to teach me.
3. I am truly grateful because I have a roof over my head, because that is something that many other people do not have.
4. I am truly grateful for all the things I've recieved in my life, because even though I don't have as much as many other people do, I do have much more than many others.
5. I am truly happy and blessed to have the free time to shop in the downtown L.A. Fashion District today, so I don't have to deal with the crowds.
6. I'm truly grateful to be able to practice my silat, and come closer to my goals to mastery of this martial art.
7. I am grateful to be of able body and sound mind, so I can continue my silat practice, or any physical endeavor I may want to try in the future.
8. I am grateful to have caught that mouse this morning, and to have put it in a better place.
9. I am so grateful and happy to be able to continue on my 1000 burpee challenge! I am now up to 32 burpees.
10. I am truly grateful, to be able to sit here, and type these things to all of you, because I hope it gets everyone out there to count their blessings as well...
Life is like a rope, twined in all its complexities and yet weaved into one marvelous stream that you have the chance to use something amazing from.So grab hold of it.It’s really really hard to accept, but you can’t change the past. You can’t go back and manipulate things to the way you wanted them to happen because life would be meaningless and boring and just not worth living. But you can change the future and that’s a beautiful thing about life. Yes, you will make mistakes and yes, you will have bad days, but was long as you let the past go, you’ll have such a gorgeous and bright future ahead of you. Knowing that things were meant to happen. I was gonna post another video today, but I found this and just HAD to post it up... Anyway, today's video is simply called C Will and Danni El. Before she left for Miami, Danni El did a few shows, one of which was in North Hollywood, at an event called VENUS AND MIC. Now I had tried to go to this event, but North Hollywood is not an area I am familiar with, so I got lost on the way there, and missed the show. But that's all right, I got to see her 2 days later at her farewell jam at O'brien's in Santa Monica.
Anyway, I think this video was Danni performing at the Venus and Mic event... The poet performing with her is an amazing guy named Chuck Williams, and the percussionist with her is another amazing guy named Nick Ware. I first heard the song they're singing at the Down n Out bar in Downtown L.A. Danni was on stage with Nick and a guy named Christopher I beleive, when she called chuck up from the audience and they performed that song. It was so cool...

I posted about this story before... If What this article is saying is true...then it's almost as bad as if the story were true. The ramifications of falsifying this type of attack will set back honest investigation tremendously. But then you have to wonder, Why in all that is holy would someone want to do something like this?

GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE!!!
You know, I've been posting about things in my life I've been grateful about for about a week and a half now, and I noticed one thing. I HAVE A HUGE AMOUNT OF THINGS TO BE GRATEFUL FOR!!! I had no idea that if I just really examined my life, I'd find so many things to be happy about. So, What am I grateful about today??? Well...
1. I'm grateful that I've awaken to a brand new day, because it's full of possibilities...
2. Even though I didn't get to work, I'm grateful that they called me in, because I know that I'll be called in sometime soon.
3. I'm very grateful that I didn't go out yesterday, or I would have missed that call.
4. I'm really grateful to have all this free time on my hands, because I can catch up on my silat training.
5. Speaking of silat training, I'm truly grateful to have a healthy body, because with it, I am capable of putting myself through Silat training, and almost any kind of training.
6. I'm truly grateful for the fitness level I've acheived so far, because although I'm not where I want to be yet, wit each day, I know I'm improving, and will get there in no time.
7. I'm truly grateful to be able to take the time to go and study other martial arts in this day and age, because not too long ago, you weren't able to.
8. I'm truly grateful to have a place where I can train and improve everyday in all aspects of my silat training.
9. I'm so excited and happy to be able to continue my Burpee Challenge! I'm up to 31 burpees a day now, and by the end of the year, I'm gonna be doing 100!!!
10. I'm truly grateful to be sitting here and typing this to you. I hope that it encourages you all to count your blessings. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

Diffuse the Ego-Recognize the True You!
How The Ego Operates
You, me and everyone else has something in us called an “ego” that diverts us from the genuine, true and authentic self that lies within. We so easily confuse the little voice in our head with the real us, and the ego’s constant stream of thought makes it very difficult to observe it from a different perspective. The illusion of ego is unfortunate because the entity behind it, the authentic you, holds all the cards to living a fulfilling, happy and successful life.
On Sunday night during the Oscars, they showed a short clip of 100 year old George Burns in which he said “when you get to be old enough, you get to be you again”. What George meant is that with age comes perspective, and towards the end of our physical lives the ego comes to accept its demise. The ‘becoming you again’ is a reference to becoming aware of the authentic self, and you will find many older people speak like this.
My question is: Why not work hard NOW to become ‘you again’ while you are still young, active and vibrant?!
Once you start becoming an observer to your ego, you begin to realize how insane it is. It is full of fear, anger, and sadness and creates conflict, uncertainty and doubt. My goal during my vacation was simply to become me again, and I did this by paying close attention to the madness of my thoughts. Once the ‘observer’ within me became clear, the anxiety and stress melted away and my authentic self was given space to manifest!
Awareness is the Universal Answer
The only way to diffuse the ego (or ‘kill’ it) is to shed awareness on the constant stream of thoughts it produces. I can tell you I have been practicing this for years, and it is hard work. Friends and clients constantly say to me: “why should I go through all the difficulty and anguish of becoming aware of my thoughts…I like my life, and I accept the illusion if that’s what it is. I am perfectly content the way I am”!
There are two reasons it is necessary to do the work of separating ego from the real you. One, you must realize that you will never find true contentment and fulfillment in your life if you are run by the thoughts in your head. If the ego is in charge you will be in a constant state of searching, comparing and desiring as opposed to being, accepting and doing.
Second, you must understand that your individual ego contributes greatly to the world around you. Humanity is in a state of relative emergency, if you haven’t noticed. Many of our established “systems” are proving to be unsustainable. This is the result of the collective ego.
Gandhi said “you must be the change you want to see in the world” and what he meant was that each of us must work individually to rid ourselves of self-polluting thoughts if we are to rid the world of war, starvation and slaughter. The underlying meaning here is that our personal growth is a contributing factor to the more global environment.
Intellectual Understanding Verses Experience
If you are reading this article then you are probably familiar with a variety of self-improvement and spiritual guides. Chances are you have a basic understanding of the ego, and how it operates. But one point I will say over and over again on this blog is this: there is a difference in having an intellectual understanding of the way the ego works and actually experiencing it.
Perhaps for this first time in human history, this type of conversation is taking place in the mainstream. Almost everyone I know can speak intelligently about something to do with the ego or global awareness. But how many people actually take the information and use it?
How many of you reading this article are actively increasing your consciousness, and using the books, articles, movies that are out there and doing the necessary work to improve yourself? The number is certainly growing, but if things are to really change on a global scale I believe we need more and more people making the shift from intellectual understanding to experience.
The Results
Once you effectively become an observer to your thoughts, you allow the real you to manifest. What is amazing is that once this happens all of the productive and creative ideas you were searching flow naturally. In my case, more than 20 wonderful ideas “came to me” over the course of 7 days I was on vacation through practicing the art of being present.
Some of them were article ideas for this blog, some were fresh ideas that can help me move forward, and others were general insights about the way I view my businesses. All of the things I would have been stressing about were virtually solved by being present. [Of course it is extremely helpful to carry around a notebook or voice recorder to capture the moments when ideas strike, and I highly recommend doing this].
I also feel as though I enjoyed my vacation more than I have vacations in the past. Being present, and purposefully creating the separation between your thoughts and authentic self, is very gratifying.
Remember, focusing on being present allows you to become aware of your typical patterns of thought in a very profound way. “Get off the couch” and make the shift from being an understander to an experiencer…it may be the very thing that saves humanity!
